The Opportunity

The Washington Department of Health (DOH) works to protect and improve the health of people in Washington State. The Office of Healthy and Safe Communities (OHSC) at the DOH works to enhance the health of individuals, families, and communities in the State of Washington. OHSC works closely with communities and local health partners to reduce chronic diseases, promote healthy lifestyles, reduce health disparities, and control health care costs. The Surveillance & Evaluation (S&E;) section of the OHSC is responsible for surveillance and evaluation activities of Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentives (FINI), Tobacco and Vapor Prevention and Control, Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention, and Injury and Violence Prevention WA State programs. Reporting to the EPI 3 supervisor, the Injury and Violence Epidemiologist analyzes injury and violence data to identify high risk population trends; works to reduce or eliminate unintentional prescription narcotics death; prepares reports and visual data presentations for local, state, and national meetings and publications; and collects data for studies.

This is a permanent full-time Epidemiologist 2 (Non-Medical) position within the Division of Prevention and Community Health, Office of Healthy and Safe Communities.

What will you be doing? – Duties include:

  • Compile and use statistical methods to analyze existing demographic, health behavior, and health outcomes data related to injury & violence and their risk factors to identify high risk populations, investigate health disparities, and evaluate impacts of public health interventions.
  • Use statistical software (e.g. "R", STATA or SAS) and GIS software (e.g. arc GIS) for analyses of public health data such as vital statistics (births and deaths), hospitalizations (CHARS), and other state and national datasets.
  • Prepare data visualization tools; develop and implement data dissemination plan; disseminate surveillance and public health.
  • Collaborate interagency with the Office of Health Professions and Facilities to address the problem of unintentional deaths due to misuse of prescription narcotics.
  • Design and collect data for evaluation studies of public health interventions.

*Required Qualifications *

  • A Master's degree or higher in Epidemiology or Public Health which includes 12 quarter hours in epidemiology and 12 graduate hours in biostatistics.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in the following:
  • Collecting, managing, and analyzing health system data.
  • Monitoring and evaluating patient care and systems of care.
  • Managing health system quality improvement programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following:

  • Manipulation and statistical analysis of multiple public health datasets such as trauma registries, hospital discharge datasets, pre-hospital datasets, injury surveillance datasets, or birth and death certificate datasets for evaluation of healthcare outcomes and health system performance.

  • Using statistical software applications that can handle large datasets, such as SAS, STATA, or R.
  • Using spreadsheet software such as MS Excel to develop complex spreadsheets and apply multiple complex formulas, link worksheets, import data, create chart and graphs, and develop macros.
  • Using word processing software such as MS Word to create, format, edit tables, columns, and charts. Create documents, bulleted and numbered lists; insert and format sections, create headers and footers; create table of contents and compile and update indexes.
  • Using email software such as MS Outlook to compose and respond to correspondence electronically.

Desired Qualifications

  • A Doctoral degree in Epidemiology or other health science field.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in applied epidemiology research and analysis.

  • Work in excess of 40 hours per week when necessary to perform the core functions of the position. Standard business hours are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but the incumbent may be expected to adjust the work schedule to meet business needs.
  • Occasionally travel as needed, either alone or with another person, overnight, for several days and/or out of state.
  • Legally operate a state or privately owned vehicle OR provide alternative transportation while on state business.
  • Interact daily with office-level managers and staff. Frequent interaction with other state, federal, and national stakeholder organizations.
  • Work in a tobacco, drug, and alcohol free environment.
  • Move objects and materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Participate in emergency response activities and when the Agency Coordination center is activated.
