The projected schedule for this position will be day shifts.
SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE AND FUNCTION
The primary function of the Veterinary Assistant is to be responsible for treatments of stable hospitalized patients and stable outpatient diagnostics and treatments.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Implement appropriate animal husbandry skills to decrease disease spread, injury and stress to patients.
Identifies signs of pain and alerts veterinarian.
Understands and provides safe restraint for cooperative canine and feline patients during examination or procedures, including radiology, ultrasound and anesthetic induction.
Performs and recognizes normal physical exam parameters of temperature, heart rate, pulse quality, respiration and mucous membranes.
Documents patient attitude, recognizes abnormal behavior and changes in condition and notifies appropriate associate of changes.
Accurately identifies and reports quality and quantity of vomiting, regurgitation, urine and fecal output.
Performs all in-house laboratory diagnostics.
Appropriately submits out-house laboratory samples to all diagnostic labs used.
If legally permitted by state laws, performs phlebotomy.
Able to set up intravenous fluids.
Can operate all brands of intravenous fluid pumps and can troubleshoot errors.
Able to disconnect and connect patient from intravenous fluids aseptically
Prepares supplies for IVC placement, blood draw and urinary catheter placement.
Prepares supplies for procedures to be performed by technician or veterinarian.
Processes deceased patients for both mass and private cremation. Accurately and promptly completes associated paperwork and prepares sympathy cards.
Transports non-critical patients for client visitation or discharge.
CONTINUING EDUCATION & CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Participates in a minimum of five (5) internal or external continuing education credit hours annually, including annual OSHA training.
Proactively seeks opportunities to improve upon skill sets and learn additional skills, enabling greater contribution to the work team.

Experience working in a veterinary practice preferred.
High School graduate.

The 20,000-square-foot hospital houses a highly qualified team who deliver veterinary care 24 hours a day, 7 days per week in emergency medicine, cardiology, critical care, internal medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, surgery, radiology and diagnostic imaging.
