Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all environmental, health & safety initiatives for the Global Cellulose Fibers Innovation Center, identifying gaps and taking actions to drive effective EHS programs focused on all injury and incident elimination

  • Provide safety teams and employees the required training, emergency response and incident investigation events to, in addition to managing the Health Services Department (contract RN)

  • Manage the operations and maintenance of interior elements of buildings, including administration and coordination of various contracted services, working with the landlord and the corporate legal department, inclusive of out of scope requests

  • Provide logistics planning and support for corporate events/functions

  • Provide leadership team with reports/updates in monthly meetings

The position will require successful candidate to have formal training/education and responsibility to lead in the following areas:

  • Evaluation and elimination of ergonomic risk factors including but not limited to work-station assessments and training

  • Conducting of thorough incident investigations (near miss, first aid, recordables, LWD, etc.) working closely with appropriate leadership for all employees, contractors, and visitors of International Paper

  • Implementation of effective emergency response membership (MERT, fire, tornado, earthquake, etc.), including training & drills to ensure the appropriate structure exists at all locations on all floors

  • Evaluation of all incidents to drive leading actions to prevent future incidents & injuries

  • Chemical hygiene, radiation safety, hazardous waste management, DOT/HAZMAT shipping, HAZWOPER, asbestos management, risk assessment, LOTO, electrical safety, fall protection, spill prevention & response, confined space and mobile equipment.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Lead local safety teams to drive grass roots effort for employee health and safety, including supporting IP’s L.I.F.E.

  • Oversight of visitor check-in process for security and safety

  • Responsible for budget planning and updates to Finance

  • Assist in managing space utilization, including internal relocation of employees and reconfiguration, construction or alteration of workspace

  • Monitor safety and health performance. Conduct safety and housekeeping inspections. Recommend priorities and actions for improvement

  • Update or develop required safety performance standards or procedures for identified risks. Review new products, equipment and processes for potential hazards and recommend modifications before introduction

  • Provide input and feedback to Facility leadership and the GCF Lead Team on matters related to safety, including but not limited to contractor safety management, emergency evacuation planning and preparedness, and safety management planning

  • Assure compliance with organization and government health, safety and environmental standards

  • Ensure all work related reporting requirements are correct and assist in coordinating workers’ compensation determinations with health services and the appropriate EHS regional worker’s compensation coordinator

  • Work with Corporate EHS&S and appropriate resources to assess and improve key safety items, including but not limited to: parking lot pedestrian safety; motorized equipment safety; contractor safety including pre-job qualifications and pre-job safety planning; training and observation regarding conformance to driver safety; and assess appropriate indoor air quality odors, complaints and such coordinating with the EHS Center of Excellence and appropriate third party vendors as needed


  • 10+ years of direct experience in leading environmental, health, and safety within a manufacturing environment or field location

  • B.S. Degree in Safety or equivalent technical discipline preferred

  • Manufacturing & facility maintenance experience required; Pulp and Paper industry experience preferred

  • Ability to influence and lead others, without direct authority
