Principal Big Data DevOps Engineer
Our Big Data ecosystem is a key next-generation platform for data analytics. This position is responsible for supporting key Big Data systems and applications that handle data ingestion, processing, and presentation layers, and scaling the system to handle billions of events in near real-time. In this exciting and challenging role, you will be responsible for support of the Big Data platforms and all associated jobs. You will provide the highest caliber of engineering support to the Salesforce security engineering teams ensuring jobs are running and data is available for security analytics. You will work to find better ways of capturing the existing engineering and application teams need for improved performance. In addition to being hands-on, you'll also serve as a key interface with other Big Data technical development and architecture teams, building new relationships through identification and remediation of issues to improve performance and availability for your customers. What you will do:
Provide care and feeding of our Big Data environments and its interfaces built upon technologies in the Analytics Ecosystem including Hadoop, Spark, Kafka and Splunk all running on Linux.
Day-to-day monitoring and troubleshooting of jobs, problems and performance issues in our clusters
Contribute to addressing evolving storage needs to meet changing requirements for scaling, reliability, performance, manageability.
Investigate and characterize non-trivial performance issues in various environments
Work with Systems and Network Engineers to evaluate new and different types of hardware to improve performance or capacity
Work with other team and data management teams to evaluate their big data use cases, provide feedback and operational design guidance
Coordinate support activities with other data and architecture teams, while prioritizing responsibilities and simultaneously working on high-priority projects
Troubleshoot production issues, engage appropriate parties, and drive through to resolution
Ensure high availability, performance, and accurate monitoring
Provide timely and appropriate communication to business owners, stakeholders, and users on issue status and resolution
What you have:
5+ years of technical support, field or application engineering experience in Big Data technologies such as Spark, Hadoop, Splunk, MapReduce, Hive, Pig, Kafka or HBase
Programming/Scripting experience in Scala, Java, Python and/or C++
Understanding of Hadoop file format, data transformation, and compression.
Experience in working with Kafka messaging system
Strong with real-time analytics using stream processing frameworks such as Spark
Experience working with Splunk (required)
Strong Linux/Unix support skills (required)
Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
Excellent customer facing, verbal and written communication skills
Strong desire to work in a fast-paced, growing, environment and make it a success
Experience in supporting cloud based technology a plus
Bachelors in information technology, computer science, application development, programming, or related degree and/or equivalent work experience
