VMware Staff Engineer – Cloud Management Operations in Seattle, Washington

VMware Cloud Management business is paving the way for a new operations management platform, one that uses all aspects of the Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) to radically improve availability, performance and cost efficiency. We are reducing barriers to SDDC adoption by providing converged transparency, contextual analytics and industry best practices enhanced by AI and machine learning. Flipping the context from Infrastructure to the application across virtual, physical and ephemeral infrastructures allows a completely new way of managing “IT”. The platform helps developers and operations teams plan, operate, visualize, analyze, and troubleshoot their applications across cloud providers and on-premise for both software-defined data centers and traditional environments.

CMBU’s Operations team is building this new platform, combining the industries best components to help our customers grow and transition from traditional data centers to the SDDC next generation datacenters while keeping enterprise grade reliability and performance at scale.

As a Staff Engineer with the team, you who will play a key technical leadership role. You will be involved in every aspect of the product development process, from early feature concept design, product development to testing and validation. You will partner with a very talented team of peers on micro-services, distributed systems, REST API, utilizing open source and in-house components. Your role will drive the architecture and design for one or more of the functional subsystems within the platform and is expected to make significant, direct and patent-grade contributions to the product that lead to increased revenue, market share or customer satisfaction. Your technical leadership will drive team behavior by setting examples and being a mentor to individuals within or outside the direct scope of influence. You should like the challenge of working on highly complex distributed system, have experience building highly available, highly performant micro-services and have an ability to work in an agile manner. You should be detail oriented with a focus on implementation excellence as well as knowledge of software development process in large-scale commercial enterprise product development.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Design across layers and distributed systems (distributed services & stores)

  • Scale over multi-machine clusters

  • Design SOA/micro-services with extensive, enterprise grade REST API and integrate them with frontend and other services

  • Apply expertise with Java/OOP and multi-thread/Futures programming in Linux/Unix environments

  • Work across backend and frontend teams, infrastructure and domain teams

  • Apply extensive TDD development and unit testing skills

  • Collaborate with product managers, customers and other teams to create a set of optimized micro-services that enable the platform


  • Expert in architecture principles, design and implementation across distributed systems, stores

  • Expert in scaling platforms over clusters

  • Proficient in design and development of services oriented architecture, integrations

  • Expert with Java/C++ or other OOP and multi-thread programming in Linux/Unix environments

  • Passionate for TDD, unit testing

  • Excellent, concise communication skills to articulate the decisions and thought process

  • Collaborative and Self-motivated

  • Masters in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience in distributed systems space
