PROTOYPE MANUFACTURING ENGINEER - SATELLITE ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW: This position requires an experienced engineer who can develop assembly facilities equipment and processes, as well as build and lead a team of engineers and technicians for the development of spacecraft vehicles and subsystems for flight. RESPONSIBILITIES: Development of assembly and integration processes for prototype spacecraft builds, and associated subsystems (Avionics, Bus, Payload). Layout prototype assembly area and material flow, including determining necessary space, equipment, and facility requirements. Identify, design, and procure necessary workstations, assembly equipment, fixtures, and material handling equipment. Maximize material flow and manufacturing processes for Hardware in the Loop in-process test systems for subsystem and vehicle assembly. Design / build handling systems to enable various levels of partial-assembly testing during prototype development; such as multi degree of freedom, accurate structures to enable positioning of instrumented test units in a variety of test facilities: Anechoic chambers, T-Vac, T-cycle, shock etc. Perform qualification of assembly equipment, including dimensional characterization, gage R&R and factorial experimentation where necessary. Ensure scalability of prototype assembly processes and equipment from low quantity builds to production rates. Participate in hands-on assembly of mechanical prototype, including build of avionics, ADCS, mechanisms, structures, and routing of harnesses. Coordinate and/or perform necessary rework on prototype mechanical parts. Analyze and resolve manufacturing issues with design and test teams. Coordinate work efforts with other various other Engineers. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical or aerospace or manufacturing engineering. 4+ years of manufacturing, fabrication, assembly or testing experience with spacecraft/spacecraft subsystems. Must have worked at SpaceX for 2+ years. PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Experience developing manufacturing operations and building spacecraft / spacecraft subsystems. Established expertise in DfX (Manufacturability, Assembly, Quality), and experienced in taking products from development to flight ready production. Experience with various manufacturing process developments, facility and line layouts, process failure mode effects analysis, and error proofing. Demonstrated experience designing assembly fixturing. Familiar and experienced with cleanroom systems and contamination controls. HITL test systems. Demonstrated problem solving skills. Familiarity with common manufacturing processes - lathe, mill (manual and CNC), water-jet, sheet metal forming, grinding, etc. Familiarity with GD&T (per ASME Y14.5) for engineering drawings and part inspection, including use of dimensional inspection tools. 3D CAD experience working with large, complex assemblies. NX 7.5 or later preferred FEA experience. FEMAP and/or ANSYS preferred. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed. This is a hands-on position that requires one to be on their feet for up to 4+ hours a day. Will sometimes be working directly and assembling hardware on the floor and will have to be comfortable stooping, bending, and standing.
