Serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator (Tractor Operator) for Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA. Duties include:
- Operates motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of up to 26,000 pounds.
- Tows trailers up to GVWR of 10,000 pounds.
- Vehicles are driven to plow snow, level and grade rough terrain, dig and back till ditches and trenches, maintain lawns, and prepare soil for fertilizing and planting grass seed or shrubbery.
- Performs preventive maintenance in accordance with established rules and regulations.
- Operates agricultural tractors with towed equipment such as brush hogs; and rotary, self-propelled, three bladed, front deck, and seven gang reel type mowers.
- Operates large, complex riding mowers with independently-controlled cutting decks.
- Uses back pack blowers and push blower vacuums to clean debris.
- Clears brush, and cuts limbs and trees using various hand and power tools such as chain saws.
- Assists with railroad repair by driving spikes, tightening bolts, placing ties, jacking and moving rails, and spreading ballast.
- Assists road crew maintaining and repairing pavements, parking areas, or similar surfaced areas of asphalt.
- Assists in digging graves, interring and disinterring coffins, closing graves, aligning headstones, and raising sunken graves.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.

- PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate to heavy physical effort may be required in making couplings between the vehicle and towed equipment and considerable physical effort may be required in doing tasks such as frequently lifting and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds. In addition, greater physical effort is needed to maneuver the heavier vehicles, especially when backing these vehicles, running power mowers, pushing heavy wheelbarrow loads of cement, using picks to remove damaged pavement, shoveling asphalt, etc. Duties require frequent and continual bending, reaching, pushing, kneeling, and lifting. Works from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and hoists, and performs work in hard to reach places. Is required to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
- WORKING CONDITIONS: Works outside in all types of weather and inside in areas that may be dusty, drafty, and noisy. Equipment, tools, and tasks frequently require special care to avoid serious injuries. Subject to loud noises, dirt, grease, oil, cuts, burns, and other injuries from handling materials, tools, and equipment. May require use of protective shoes, gloves, and safety glasses when working around craftsmen or asphalt repair work.
